Ahijah, wearing the priestly Ephod, was also there. There were about six hundred men with him. Meanwhile, Saul was taking it easy under the pomegranate tree at the threshing floor on the edge of town at Geba (Gibeah). Later that day, Jonathan, Saul’s son, said to his armor bearer, “Come on, let’s go over to the Philistine garrison patrol on the other side of the pass.” But he didn’t tell his father. A patrol of Philistines took up a position at Micmash Pass. So when the battle of Micmash was joined, there wasn’t a sword or spear to be found anywhere in Israel-except for Saul and his son Jonathan they were both well-armed. They charged a silver coin for the plowshares and mattocks, and half that for the rest. The Philistines made sure of that-“Lest those Hebrews start making swords and spears.” That meant that the Israelites had to go down among the Philistines to keep their farm tools-plowshares and mattocks, axes and sickles-sharp and in good repair. There wasn’t a blacksmith to be found anywhere in Israel. No one can stop God from saving when he sets his mind to it.” There’s no rule that says God can only deliver by using a big army. He declared, “Come on now, let’s go across to these uncircumcised pagans. Therefore, he proposed a plan to his armor bearer to confront the Philistines, just the two of them. Therefore, regardless of how impossible it appeared, he knew they would have victory. We find in these Scriptures that Jonathan and his armor bearer were two of the very few who had any weapons at all. We are seeing much of the same thing in our nation today. The first thing they did was make sure the Israelites didn’t have any protection or weapons. It speaks of a time when the Philistines were attacking the Israelites. As I read his riveting words, God took me to a section of Scripture I haven’t been able to get away from for weeks.
